Þrym

Þrym is a figure from Norse mythology, primarily known from the poem Þrymskviða (The Lay of Þrymr) in the Poetic Edda. He is a jötunn, a giant, who steals the hammer of the god Thor, Mjölnir. Þrym lives in Jötunheimr, the realm of the giants.

In the poem, Þrym demands the goddess Freyja as his bride in exchange for the return of Mjölnir. Freyja, however, is unwilling to marry the giant. The gods then devise a plan where Thor, disguised as Freyja, is brought to Þrym's hall. Loki, disguised as Freyja's handmaiden, accompanies him.

During the wedding feast, Þrym becomes suspicious of "Freyja's" large appetite and fierce gaze. Loki explains this away by claiming "she" was consumed by eagerness to marry him. Finally, when Mjölnir is brought to consecrate the marriage, Thor is able to reveal himself, grab his hammer, and slaughter Þrym and the other giants present. Þrym's role in the myth is that of a boastful and ultimately foolish antagonist whose actions provoke a humorous and decisive response from Thor and the other gods.
