Ülikirgustel

Ülikirgustel is an Estonian term that translates to "supernova" in English. It refers to a powerful and luminous stellar explosion that occurs at the end of a star's life cycle. This catastrophic event is the most energetic phenomenon in the universe, briefly outshining entire galaxies.

Supernovae are broadly classified into two main types: Type I and Type II. Type I supernovae are thought to arise from binary star systems where a white dwarf star accretes matter from its companion. When the white dwarf exceeds a critical mass (the Chandrasekhar limit), it triggers a runaway nuclear fusion reaction, resulting in an explosion. Type II supernovae, on the other hand, occur when a massive star, typically more than eight times the mass of our Sun, exhausts its nuclear fuel. The star's core collapses under its own gravity, leading to a rebound shockwave that blasts the outer layers into space.

The remnants of a supernova can include a neutron star or, if the progenitor star was massive enough, a black hole. Supernovae play a crucial role in the cosmos by synthesizing and dispersing heavy elements, such as iron, gold, and uranium, into interstellar space. These elements are essential building blocks for new stars, planets, and ultimately, life as we know it.
