Üledéktömörödés

Üledéktömörödés is a Hungarian term that translates to sediment compaction or consolidation. It refers to the geological process by which loose sediments, such as sand, silt, and clay, are transformed into solid rock over time. This transformation occurs due to the weight of overlying sediments, which reduces the pore space between sediment grains and expels water.

The process of üledéktömörödés involves several stages. Initially, the deposition of new sediment layers on top of existing ones increases the pressure. This pressure forces the individual sediment particles closer together. Water trapped within the pore spaces is squeezed out. Over geological timescales, this physical compaction can significantly reduce the volume of the sediment.

In addition to physical compaction, chemical changes can also contribute to üledéktömörödés, a process known as cementation. Dissolved minerals in the pore water can precipitate between the sediment grains, acting like a natural glue that binds the particles together. Common cementing agents include silica, calcite, and iron oxides.

The resulting consolidated sediments are then classified as sedimentary rocks. The type of sedimentary rock formed depends on the original sediment composition and the extent of compaction and cementation. For example, compacted sand forms sandstone, compacted silt forms siltstone, and compacted clay forms mudstone or shale.
