Ühikutest

Ühikutest is a term that broadly refers to units of measurement. These are standardized quantities used to express physical properties like length, mass, time, temperature, and electric current. The use of standardized units is crucial for consistent and reproducible scientific experiments, trade, and everyday communication.

Historically, various systems of units existed, often based on local customs or body parts. This led to considerable confusion and difficulty in interregional trade and scientific collaboration. The most widely adopted and internationally recognized system today is the International System of Units, known as SI (Système International d'Unités). The SI system is based on seven base units: the meter for length, the kilogram for mass, the second for time, the ampere for electric current, the kelvin for thermodynamic temperature, the mole for amount of substance, and the candela for luminous intensity. All other SI units, known as derived units, are formed by combining these base units.

In Estonia, where the term "ühikutest" is used, the SI system is the official standard. However, some other units may still be encountered in specific contexts, such as imperial units in older literature or specific industries.
