Úthafsskorpu

Úthafsskorpu is the geological term for the Earth's crust that makes up the ocean floor. It is significantly thinner and denser than continental crust, primarily composed of basaltic rock. This oceanic crust is formed at mid-ocean ridges through a process called seafloor spreading, where magma rises from the mantle, cools, and solidifies. As new crust is generated, it pushes the older crust away from the ridge.

Over geological time, oceanic crust is constantly being created and destroyed. It is eventually recycled back into the Earth's mantle at subduction zones, typically found at oceanic trenches where one tectonic plate slides beneath another.
