Öysters

Oysters are bivalve mollusks that live in marine and brackish habitats. They are known for their rough, irregular shells and their ability to filter water. Oysters are found in coastal waters worldwide, typically attached to hard surfaces. There are several species of oysters, with the most common edible varieties belonging to the genus Crassostrea and Ostrea.

The primary ecological role of oysters is water filtration. As they pump water through their bodies to feed on plankton and other organic particles, they remove suspended solids, thereby improving water clarity and quality. Oyster reefs also create complex habitats that support a diverse range of marine life, acting as nurseries and shelters for fish and invertebrates.

Oysters are a significant food source for humans and have been consumed for centuries. They are often eaten raw, steamed, fried, or incorporated into various culinary dishes. Beyond their culinary value, oysters are also prized for the pearls they can produce, although not all oyster species are capable of forming pearls, and only a small percentage of those pearls are of gem quality. The cultivation of oysters, known as oyster farming or oystering, is a common practice in many coastal regions, contributing to both food security and economic activity.
