Öljyanalyysi, which translates to oil analysis in English, is a diagnostic technique used to assess the condition of oil and the equipment it lubricates. This process involves taking samples of the oil from machinery such as engines, hydraulic systems, and turbines and subjecting them to various laboratory tests. The goal of these tests is to detect wear metals, contaminants, and changes in the oil's properties, all of which can indicate potential problems within the equipment.

By analyzing the type and quantity of wear particles present, technicians can identify which components are wearing out and the severity of that wear. For example, the presence of iron particles might suggest wear in the crankshaft or bearings of an engine, while copper particles could indicate issues with bushings or coolers. Beyond wear metals, oil analysis also looks for contaminants like water, fuel, or coolant, which can degrade the oil's lubrication capabilities and cause corrosion.

Changes in the oil's physical and chemical properties, such as viscosity, acidity, or oxidation levels, are also monitored. A decrease in viscosity, for instance, can signal oil breakdown or contamination, while an increase in acidity might point to the formation of corrosive byproducts. The data gathered from oil analysis allows for predictive maintenance, enabling operators to schedule repairs before catastrophic failures occur.
