Ægcellen

The term "ægcellen" is an archaic or dialectal form of the Danish word for egg cell. In modern Danish, the correct term is "ægcelle." An egg cell, also known as an ovum or ovule, is the female reproductive cell involved in sexual reproduction. It is produced in the ovaries of female animals.

The egg cell is typically much larger than the male sperm cell. It contains the female's genetic material in the form of chromosomes, as well as nutrients that will support the early development of an embryo if fertilization occurs. The egg cell is a haploid cell, meaning it contains half the number of chromosomes found in a somatic (body) cell. Upon fertilization by a sperm cell, the egg cell becomes a zygote, which then begins to divide and develop.

In plants, the term "ovule" is more commonly used for the structure that contains the female gamete. The ovule matures into a seed after fertilization. The specific historical or regional usage of "ægcellen" would depend on the context in which it is encountered, but its fundamental meaning refers to the female gamete.
