Äänihuulissa

Äänihuulissa, also known as vocal cords, are two bands of muscle tissue located in the larynx, or voice box. They are responsible for producing sound when air passes through them. When a person speaks, sings, or makes other vocalizations, the muscles in the larynx contract, bringing the vocal cords together. Air from the lungs is then forced through the narrow opening between the vocal cords, causing them to vibrate. This vibration creates sound waves, which are then shaped by the throat, mouth, and nose to form distinct speech sounds.

The pitch of the voice is determined by the tension and length of the vocal cords. Tighter, shorter vocal cords vibrate more rapidly, producing a higher pitch. Conversely, looser, longer vocal cords vibrate more slowly, resulting in a lower pitch. The volume of the voice is controlled by the force of the air expelled from the lungs. Stronger airflow leads to louder sounds.

The vocal cords can be affected by various factors, including illness, overuse, and certain medical conditions. Inflammation, such as laryngitis, can cause hoarseness or temporary loss of voice. Nodules or polyps, which are growths on the vocal cords, can also impair voice production. Maintaining proper vocal hygiene, such as staying hydrated and avoiding shouting, is important for vocal cord health.
