Äänensignaaleja refers to audio signals, which are representations of sound waves in a form that can be processed, transmitted, or stored. These signals are typically electrical or digital in nature. In their electrical form, sound waves are converted into fluctuating voltages by a transducer like a microphone. These voltage variations mimic the pressure changes of the original sound wave. This analog signal can then be amplified, filtered, or manipulated.

For digital processing and storage, analog audio signals are converted into discrete numerical values through a process called analog-to-digital conversion (ADC). This involves sampling the analog signal at regular intervals and quantizing the amplitude of each sample. The resulting stream of numbers forms a digital audio signal. Conversely, digital audio signals can be converted back into analog signals for playback using a digital-to-analog converter (DAC).

Audio signals are fundamental to a vast range of technologies, including music recording and playback, telecommunications, sound reinforcement systems, audio effects processing, and voice recognition.
