Ämnesomsättning, or metabolism in English, refers to the complex set of chemical processes that occur within a living organism to maintain life. It encompasses both anabolism, the building up of complex molecules, and catabolism, the breaking down of complex molecules into simpler ones to release energy.

A higher metabolic rate means the body burns more calories at rest. Hormones, such as thyroid hormones, play a crucial role in regulating metabolic rate.
