Zuidpolen is a term used in Dutch to refer to the South Pole. The South Pole is the southernmost point on the Earth's surface, located at 90°S latitude. It is situated on the continent of Antarctica, a vast ice-covered landmass. The geographical South Pole is defined by the axis of Earth's rotation.

Historically, reaching the South Pole was a significant feat of exploration. Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and his team were the first to reach the geographic South Pole on December 14, 1911. They were followed by a British expedition led by Robert Falcon Scott, who reached the pole a month later, only to find Amundsen's flag already there. The journey to the South Pole is characterized by extreme cold, harsh weather conditions, and a challenging icy terrain.

Today, the South Pole is home to the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station, a United States scientific research facility. This station conducts a wide range of research, including astronomy, atmospheric science, and glaciology. The South Pole is also a popular destination for adventurous tourists who undertake expeditions to witness its unique environment. The concept of the South Pole also extends to magnetic poles, which are different from the geographic South Pole and shift over time due to changes in Earth's magnetic field.
