Zeoliti are a group of microporous aluminosilicate minerals. They are characterized by a framework structure composed of silicon and aluminum tetrahedra, with oxygen atoms bridging the silicon and aluminum atoms. This framework forms a three-dimensional lattice with channels and cavities of molecular dimensions.

The presence of aluminum in the framework results in a net negative charge, which is balanced by exchangeable cations, such as sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, located within the cavities. These cations, along with water molecules, can be reversibly removed and reinserted without altering the fundamental aluminosilicate framework. This ion-exchange capacity is a key property of zeolites.

Zeoliti occur naturally in volcanic rocks and sedimentary deposits, but many are also synthesized for specific industrial applications. Their unique porous structure and ion-exchange properties make them useful in a variety of fields. They are widely employed as adsorbents for separating gases and liquids, as catalysts in petrochemical processes and organic synthesis, and as ion exchangers in water softening and detergents.
