Zatürre is the term used in some regions, particularly in parts of Eastern Europe and Central Asia, to refer to pneumonia. Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs. The air sacs may fill with fluid or pus, causing cough with phlegm or pus, fever, chills, and difficulty breathing. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi.

Bacterial pneumonia is the most common type. Streptococcus pneumoniae is a frequent cause. Viral pneumonia can be caused by influenza viruses, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and coronaviruses, including the one that causes COVID-19. Fungal pneumonia is less common but can occur in people with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms of zatürre can range from mild to severe and depend on the cause, age, and overall health of the individual. Common symptoms include cough, fever, chills, shortness of breath, and chest pain that worsens when breathing deeply or coughing. Other symptoms may include fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, chest X-ray, and sometimes blood tests or sputum tests to identify the causative agent. Treatment depends on the cause and severity of the illness. Bacterial pneumonia is treated with antibiotics, while viral pneumonia may require antiviral medications or supportive care. Fungal pneumonia is treated with antifungal medications. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary for oxygen therapy or mechanical ventilation. Prevention includes vaccinations, such as the pneumococcal vaccine and influenza vaccine, and good hygiene practices.
