Ympäristövastus, often translated as environmental resistance, is a concept in ecology that describes the sum of all factors that limit the growth and reproduction of a population in an environment. These factors can be biotic, meaning they are living organisms, or abiotic, meaning they are non-living aspects of the environment.

Biotic factors include competition for resources such as food, water, and shelter between individuals of the same or different species. Predation, where one organism hunts and kills another for food, is another significant biotic factor. Parasitism, where one organism benefits at the expense of another, and disease also contribute to environmental resistance.

Abiotic factors encompass a wide range of environmental conditions. These include climate variables like temperature, rainfall, and sunlight. Availability of essential resources like water and nutrients in the soil are also crucial. Physical factors such as space, shelter from the elements, and natural disasters like fires or floods play a role in limiting population growth.

Environmental resistance acts as a natural regulating mechanism, preventing populations from growing indefinitely and exceeding the carrying capacity of their environment. The interplay between these resistance factors determines the size and stability of populations within an ecosystem. When environmental resistance is low, populations may experience rapid growth. Conversely, high environmental resistance can lead to population decline or stabilization at lower numbers.
