This concept is most commonly explored in science fiction and theoretical discussions about space colonization.

The scope of environmental modification can vary greatly. In its simplest form, it might involve creating enclosed habitats that replicate Earth-like conditions. More ambitious scenarios, however, envision large-scale planetary engineering, such as thickening a planet's atmosphere to provide breathable air and sufficient atmospheric pressure, or warming a frozen world to create liquid water on the surface. Introducing or modifying plant and animal life to establish a functioning ecosystem is also a key aspect of comprehensive environmental modification.

The feasibility of such large-scale endeavors is currently beyond our technological capabilities. Challenges include the immense energy requirements, the long timescales involved, and the potential for unintended and irreversible consequences. Ethical considerations also arise, particularly regarding the potential impact on any indigenous life that might exist on a target planet. Despite these challenges, environmental modification remains a compelling concept in discussions about humanity's future in space.
