Ylähengitysteissä refers to the upper respiratory tract in Finnish. This anatomical region encompasses the structures responsible for the initial passage of air into the body, including the nose, nasal cavity, pharynx, and larynx. These parts play a crucial role in breathing, smelling, speaking, and protecting the lower respiratory system.

The nose and nasal cavity are the primary entry points for air. They warm, humidify, and filter inhaled air, trapping dust particles and pathogens with mucus and tiny hairs called cilia. The pharynx, or throat, is a shared passageway for both air and food, connecting the nasal cavity and mouth to the larynx and esophagus. It is divided into three parts: the nasopharynx, oropharynx, and laryngopharynx.

The larynx, commonly known as the voice box, is located in the neck and serves a dual purpose. It allows air to pass into the trachea (windpipe) and also contains the vocal cords, which vibrate to produce sound. During swallowing, a flap of cartilage called the epiglottis covers the opening of the larynx, preventing food and liquid from entering the airway. Infections or inflammation of the upper respiratory tract, such as the common cold or sinusitis, commonly affect these structures.
