Yhteenlasku is the arithmetic operation that combines two numbers to produce their sum. It is a binary operation defined on numbers, with the result written as a + b. Yhteenlaskua used to be one of the four basic arithmetic operations along with subtraction, multiplication and division, and it is defined for natural numbers, integers, real numbers, complex numbers and many algebraic structures.

Key properties include commutativity (a + b = b + a) and associativity ((a + b) + c = a + (b + c)), as well as the existence of an additive identity (a + 0 = a). For natural numbers, integers and real numbers, addition is closed and straightforward. Every number has an additive inverse (−a) such that a + (−a) = 0, when considering integers, rational, real and complex numbers.

In practice, yhteenlasku is taught through decimal addition, where digits are added column by column from right to left with carries. It also generalizes to other numeral systems (binary, hexadecimal) and forms the basis for more advanced operations. Beyond scalar addition, the concept extends to vector addition (coordinate-wise), complex addition, and matrix addition (element-wise).

Yhteenlasku underpins everyday mathematics, from counting and budgeting to scientific calculations. It also serves as a foundational tool in algebra and higher mathematics, where it interacts with subtraction, multiplication and division and helps define more complex structures and procedures.
