Xylem celler are specialized plant cells that form the xylem tissue, a primary component of the vascular system in plants. The primary function of xylem is the transport of water and dissolved minerals from the roots to the rest of the plant, and it also provides structural support.

There are several types of xylem cells, including tracheids, vessel elements, xylem parenchyma, and xylem fibers. Tracheids and vessel elements are the main water-conducting cells. They are elongated, hollow cells with thickened, lignified secondary walls. Vessel elements are typically shorter and wider than tracheids and are arranged end-to-end to form continuous vessels. Lignin, a complex polymer, provides strength and rigidity to the xylem cell walls, preventing collapse under the tension of water transport.

Xylem parenchyma cells are living cells involved in storage of food reserves and also play a role in lateral transport of water. Xylem fibers are elongated, thick-walled cells that contribute significantly to the mechanical strength of the plant. Mature xylem cells, particularly tracheids and vessel elements, are dead at functional maturity, their protoplasts having disintegrated to create unobstructed channels for water flow. The formation of xylem, known as xylogenesis, is a crucial developmental process for plant survival and growth.
