Wolframelektrode refers to an electrode made from tungsten, a refractory metal known for its extremely high melting point. Tungsten electrodes are commonly used in various welding processes, most notably in gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), also known as TIG welding. Their ability to withstand high temperatures without melting or significant degradation is crucial for maintaining a stable arc and producing clean welds.

The properties of tungsten electrodes are influenced by the addition of alloying elements. Pure tungsten electrodes, while having the highest melting point, can be brittle and may suffer from arc instability. To overcome these limitations, small amounts of other metals are often added. Common alloying elements include thorium oxide (thoriated tungsten), lanthanum oxide (lanthanated tungsten), cerium oxide (ceriated tungsten), and zirconium oxide (zirconiated tungsten). These additions improve arc starting, arc stability, current carrying capacity, and reduce electrode erosion.

The type of tungsten electrode chosen depends on the welding application, the type of metal being welded, and the welding current. For instance, thoriated electrodes were historically popular for AC and DC welding but are now less favored due to radioactivity concerns. Lanthanated and ceriated electrodes are considered good all-around choices for both AC and DC welding, offering excellent arc stability and longevity. Zirconiated electrodes are often preferred for AC welding of aluminum and magnesium alloys due to their superior resistance to contamination. Proper selection and preparation of the tungsten electrode are essential for achieving high-quality welds.
