The notation W×H is typically read as "width by height." In digital media, W and H usually denote pixel counts, with examples such as 1920×1080 or 1280×720. In print or physical contexts, W and H may measure units like inches or millimeters, and the final printed size depends on the resolution (dots per inch or pixels per inch).

The area of a rectangle with these dimensions is W×H square units. The aspect ratio is the width-to-height ratio (W/H) and is often expressed as a pair of integers, such as 16:9 or 4:3. Aspect ratio describes the shape and remains constant under uniform scaling.

Orientation is influenced by the relation between W and H: landscape when W > H, portrait when H > W, and square when W = H. Applications span screen resolutions, video frame sizes, image files, and page or poster dimensions. In raster graphics, W and H specify the number of pixels in the image; in vector graphics, they define a bounding box that can be resized without quality loss.
