Heat transfer, or warmteoverdracht in Dutch, is the study of how thermal energy moves between bodies or substances with different temperatures. It describes the mechanisms that cause energy to flow without the matter itself necessarily moving, and it is a central concern in engineering, science, and everyday life.

There are three primary modes: conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction occurs via molecular interactions and lattice vibrations within solids or at interfaces. Convection involves bulk fluid motion, such as air or liquid circulating around a surface. Radiation transfers energy through electromagnetic waves and can occur in vacuum.

The rate and manner of heat transfer are described by several laws. Fourier's law governs conduction, relating heat flux to temperature gradient and material conductivity (q = -k ∇T). Newton's law of cooling approximates convective transfer as proportional to the temperature difference. Radiation follows the Stefan-Boltzmann law, q = εσA(T^4 - T_sur^4).

Common applications include building insulation to limit unwanted transfer, heat exchangers in chemical processing, cooling of electronic devices, cooking, and many industrial processes. Materials are chosen for their thermal conductivity, diffusivity, and heat capacity to achieve desired performance.

Historically, the study of heat transfer advanced with Fourier's work in the early 19th century, laying the mathematical foundation for conduction. It was complemented by experiments of Joule and later refinements that linked thermal properties to material structure. The field now integrates thermodynamics, materials science, and fluid dynamics.
