Võõrrahastus, a concept rooted in Marxist theory and further developed by thinkers like Georg Lukács and Jean-Paul Sartre, describes a state of alienation experienced by individuals within capitalist societies. It refers to the estrangement of people from the products of their labor, from the process of their labor, from themselves, and from others.

In a capitalist system, workers do not own the means of production nor the goods they create. Instead, their labor is a commodity, sold to employers for wages. This separation from the fruits of their work can lead to a feeling that the products of their labor are foreign and beyond their control. Furthermore, the repetitive and often dehumanizing nature of factory work, where tasks are broken down into small, meaningless components, can alienate individuals from the creative and fulfilling aspects of their own labor.

This alienation extends to a sense of estrangement from one's own human essence, or "species-being." When labor is not a source of self-expression and fulfillment but merely a means to survive, individuals can feel disconnected from their true potential and identity. Finally, the competitive nature of capitalist society, where individuals are often pitted against each other for resources and advancement, can foster social alienation, making genuine human connection difficult. The concept remains a significant lens through which to analyze social and economic inequalities and their psychological impact.
