Võimsusdiood is the Estonian term for a power diode. A power diode is a semiconductor diode designed to handle large currents and voltages. Unlike signal diodes which are optimized for high-speed switching and low current applications, power diodes are built for robustness and the ability to dissipate significant amounts of heat. They typically have a larger physical size than signal diodes to accommodate this heat dissipation, often featuring metal cases with heat sink mounting provisions.

The primary function of a power diode is rectification, converting alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). This is achieved through their inherent property of allowing current to flow predominantly in one direction. Applications for power diodes are widespread in electronics, including power supplies for various devices, motor control circuits, welding equipment, and battery charging systems. They are crucial components in forming rectifier bridges, which are essential for DC power generation.

Power diodes come in various types, each with specific characteristics suitable for different applications. These include rectifier diodes, fast recovery diodes, and Schottky diodes. Rectifier diodes are general-purpose diodes for AC to DC conversion. Fast recovery diodes are designed for switching applications where rapid turn-off times are critical. Schottky diodes offer a lower forward voltage drop, leading to increased efficiency in certain power conversion circuits. The selection of a specific power diode depends on factors such as the required forward current, reverse voltage rating, switching speed, and operating temperature.
