Värisyvyydet, or color depth, refers to the number of bits used to represent the color of a single pixel in a digital image or display. A higher color depth allows for a wider range of colors to be displayed, resulting in more realistic and nuanced images.

Common color depths include 1-bit, 4-bit, 8-bit, 16-bit, 24-bit, and 30-bit or higher. A 1-bit color depth can only represent two colors, typically black and white. An 8-bit color depth, also known as 256 colors, can display 256 different colors. This was common in early computing.

The most widely used color depth today is 24-bit color, often referred to as "true color." This depth uses 8 bits for each of the red, green, and blue color channels, allowing for 2^24 (approximately 16.7 million) distinct colors. This is sufficient for most photographic and visual applications.

Higher color depths, such as 30-bit or 36-bit, are used in professional photography, graphic design, and high-end display technologies. These offer a much wider color gamut and smoother gradients, reducing the appearance of "banding" or distinct steps between color shades, which can be visible in images with subtle color transitions at lower color depths. Understanding color depth is crucial for appreciating the fidelity of digital images and displays.
