Värisyvyydellä, known in English as color depth, is a concept in digital imaging that refers to the number of bits used to represent the color of a single pixel. A higher color depth allows for a greater range of colors to be displayed, resulting in more realistic and nuanced images.

The most common color depth is 24-bit color, also known as Truecolor. In this system, each pixel is represented by 24 bits, with 8 bits dedicated to red, 8 bits to green, and 8 bits to blue. This allows for 2^24, or approximately 16.7 million, distinct colors. This is generally sufficient for most visual applications, as it exceeds the number of colors the human eye can distinguish.

Lower color depths, such as 8-bit color (256 colors) or 16-bit color (65,536 colors), were more common in earlier computing environments due to limitations in memory and processing power. While these can still be used for certain applications, such as simple graphics or for reducing file sizes, they can result in visible banding or posterization in images with smooth color gradients.

Higher color depths, such as 30-bit or 48-bit color, are used in professional contexts like digital photography and graphic design where precise color representation and editing are critical. These higher depths offer a significantly expanded range of colors, enabling finer gradations and preventing color clipping during image manipulation. The choice of color depth impacts both the visual quality of an image and its file size.
