Värilämpö, often translated as color temperature, is a characteristic of visible light that describes the perceived hue of light emitted by a light source. It is measured in Kelvin (K). While it is called color temperature, it is not a direct measure of the actual temperature of the light source but rather an analogy to the temperature of a black-body radiator that would emit light of a similar spectral distribution.

Different light sources have different color temperatures. For instance, candlelight has a low color temperature, around 1800-2000 K, and appears warm and yellowish. Sunlight at noon has a higher color temperature, around 5500-6500 K, and appears neutral or slightly bluish. Fluorescent lamps and LEDs can have a wide range of color temperatures, from warm white (around 2700 K) to cool white (around 6500 K) or even daylight (around 5000 K).

Understanding color temperature is important in various fields, including photography, videography, interior design, and lighting. It influences the mood and atmosphere of a space and affects how colors appear. For example, warm color temperatures are often used to create a cozy and inviting ambiance, while cool color temperatures can evoke a sense of alertness and clarity.
