Candlelight is the light produced by a candle, created when the wax around a wick is heated and drawn toward the flame, where it vaporizes and combusts. The flame emits light and heat, and its perceived color and brightness depend on wax composition, wick size, and air flow.

Historically, candles were made from tallow and beeswax, with beeswax favored for brightness and scent but more expensive. Over time molded and dipped candles became common in Europe and Asia. The advent of paraffin wax in the 19th century reduced cost and improved stability, leading to widespread use.

Common candle materials include paraffin wax, beeswax, soy wax, palm wax, and blends. Wicks are typically cotton or braided fibers; some modern candles use wooden wicks. Many candles are sold as containers, which are filled with wax and may have decorative shapes or scents.

Candlelight serves purposes beyond illumination, including religious and ceremonial use, romantic or atmospheric setting, and visual arts such as photography and theater lighting. It also appears in literature and music as a symbol of warmth, reflection, or memorial presence.

Safety and environmental considerations accompany candle use: candles pose fire hazards and should be placed away from flammable materials, never left unattended, and used in stable holders. Wick trimming and ventilation reduce soot. Alternatives such as LED or battery-powered candles provide light with lower risk.
