Väljateoreemia, meaning "field theory" in Estonian, is a branch of mathematics and theoretical physics that studies abstract algebraic structures called fields. Fields are sets equipped with two binary operations, typically called addition and multiplication, that satisfy certain axioms. These axioms ensure that fields behave much like the familiar number systems of rational and real numbers, allowing for concepts like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division (except by zero).

In abstract algebra, väljateoreemia focuses on the properties of fields themselves, their relationships, and the structures that can be built upon them. This includes studying field extensions, where one field is embedded within a larger field, and the classification of different types of fields.
