Välittäjäaineille is a Finnish term that translates to "neurotransmitters" in English. Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that transmit signals across a synapse from one neuron to another neuron, or to a target cell such as a muscle cell or gland cell. This communication process is fundamental to the functioning of the nervous system, enabling everything from simple reflexes to complex cognitive processes.

These molecules are synthesized and stored within the presynaptic neuron. When an action potential arrives at the axon terminal, it triggers the release of neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft, the small gap between neurons. The neurotransmitters then diffuse across the cleft and bind to specific receptors on the postsynaptic neuron. This binding can either excite or inhibit the postsynaptic neuron, depending on the type of neurotransmitter and receptor involved.

There are many different types of neurotransmitters, each with distinct roles. For example, acetylcholine is involved in muscle contraction and memory, dopamine plays a role in reward and motivation, serotonin influences mood and sleep, and glutamate is the primary excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain.
