Väliskõrvade is a term that refers to the external parts of the ear. In human anatomy, this is primarily composed of the auricle, also known as the pinna, and the external auditory canal. The auricle is the visible, cartilaginous structure on the side of the head. Its shape is designed to collect sound waves and direct them into the ear canal. The external auditory canal is a tube that extends from the auricle to the eardrum. Its primary functions include transmitting sound waves and protecting the delicate structures within the middle and inner ear. It also produces earwax, or cerumen, which helps to clean and lubricate the ear canal and trap foreign particles.

The structure of the auricle is complex, with various folds and curves that contribute to its sound-gathering ability. These include the helix, antihelix, concha, and lobule (earlobe). The external auditory canal is lined with skin that contains glands responsible for producing earwax. This canal typically measures about 2.5 centimeters in length in adults.

Variations in the size and shape of the väliskõrvade can occur between individuals. In some cases, congenital differences or acquired injuries can affect the appearance or function of these external ear structures. Medical conditions or trauma can lead to conditions such as microtia, where the auricle is underdeveloped, or atresia, where the ear canal is abnormally closed.
