Välikorvaan refers to the middle ear in Finnish. It is the air-filled cavity of the vertebrate ear that contains the ossicles: the malleus, incus, and stapes. The middle ear is located between the outer ear and the inner ear. Sound waves traveling through the ear canal cause the tympanic membrane (eardrum) to vibrate. These vibrations are then transmitted and amplified by the ossicles to the oval window, a membrane-covered opening to the cochlea in the inner ear. The middle ear plays a crucial role in efficiently transferring sound energy from the air to the fluid-filled inner ear, enabling hearing.

The Eustachian tube, also known as the auditory tube or pharyngotympanic tube, connects the middle ear to the nasopharynx. This tube is important for equalizing pressure between the middle ear and the outside atmosphere. It also allows for drainage of fluid from the middle ear. Infections of the middle ear, commonly known as otitis media, can occur when the Eustachian tube becomes blocked or inflamed, leading to fluid buildup and potential hearing loss. The proper functioning of the välikorvaan is essential for clear and effective hearing.
