Väliaivot, also known as the diencephalon, is a major division of the forebrain located between the telencephalon and the midbrain. It plays a crucial role in regulating a wide range of autonomic and endocrine functions. The diencephalon is composed of several key structures, including the thalamus, hypothalamus, epithalamus, and subthalamus.

The thalamus acts as a central relay station for sensory information, processing and transmitting signals from the body to the cerebral cortex. It is involved in consciousness, sleep, and alertness. The hypothalamus, situated below the thalamus, is a vital control center for the autonomic nervous system and the endocrine system. It regulates body temperature, hunger, thirst, sleep-wake cycles, and hormone release from the pituitary gland.

The epithalamus, located at the posterior part of the diencephalon, includes the pineal gland, which produces melatonin and influences circadian rhythms. The subthalamus, found below the thalamus, is involved in motor control, working in conjunction with the basal ganglia. Together, these structures of the diencephalon are essential for maintaining homeostasis and mediating responses to both internal and external stimuli. Its intricate connections with other brain regions allow for complex integration of sensory, motor, and emotional information.
