Vähentäjä is a Finnish word that translates to "subtractor" in English. In mathematics, a subtractor is a fundamental arithmetic circuit that performs subtraction. It is the counterpart to an adder, which performs addition. A subtractor can be designed to subtract two binary numbers, producing a difference and a borrow bit.

The basic building block of a binary subtractor is a full subtractor, which takes three input bits (minuend, subtrahend, and borrow-in) and produces two output bits (difference and borrow-out).
