Väestönlaskenta (Finnish for census) is a systematic collection, compilation, and publication of demographic, economic, and social data pertaining to a specified population at a particular time. In Finland, the primary responsibility for conducting censuses has historically fallen to Statistics Finland (Tilastokeskus). Historically, censuses were conducted at regular intervals, often every ten years, to provide a snapshot of the nation's population characteristics. This included information on age, sex, marital status, occupation, education, and household composition.

The purpose of censuses is multifaceted. They are crucial for understanding population trends, such as growth, decline, and migration patterns, which are essential for national planning and policy-making. Governments use census data to allocate resources effectively, plan for public services like healthcare and education, and draw electoral boundaries. Businesses also rely on census data for market research and investment decisions.

In modern Finland, the traditional de jure census, where every person is counted at their place of usual residence, has evolved. Due to the increasing availability and integration of administrative data from various registers, Finland has transitioned to a register-based census. This means that instead of directly surveying individuals, census data is compiled by linking and processing information from existing population registers, such as the population register center, tax registers, and social security registers. This approach is considered more efficient and less burdensome for the public. The register-based census provides a comprehensive and up-to-date picture of the Finnish population.
