Väderobservationens, or weather observation, is the process of measuring and recording atmospheric conditions at a specific time and location. This practice is fundamental to meteorology, providing the raw data necessary for understanding weather patterns, forecasting future conditions, and studying climate change.

Historically, weather observations were often qualitative, relying on human senses to describe phenomena like cloud cover, wind direction, and precipitation. Over time, instruments were developed to quantify these elements more precisely. Early instruments included the thermometer for temperature, the barometer for atmospheric pressure, and the anemometer for wind speed.

Modern weather observation relies on a sophisticated network of ground-based stations, weather balloons, buoys, and satellites. These systems collect data on a wide range of variables, including temperature, humidity, air pressure, wind speed and direction, precipitation type and amount, cloud cover, visibility, and solar radiation.

The collected data is then transmitted to meteorological centers worldwide. Here, it is processed, analyzed, and used to create weather maps and models. These models are the basis for weather forecasts, which are crucial for various sectors, including agriculture, transportation, aviation, and disaster preparedness.

Beyond forecasting, long-term weather observation data is essential for climate monitoring. By tracking trends in temperature, precipitation, and other variables over decades and centuries, scientists can identify significant changes in the Earth's climate system and assess the impacts of human activities. The accuracy and consistency of weather observations are therefore critical for both immediate weather awareness and long-term environmental understanding.
