Vulkanointiaineen, commonly referred to as a vulcanizing agent, is a chemical substance used in the vulcanization process of rubber. Vulcanization is a chemical process that improves the strength, elasticity, and durability of natural or synthetic rubber. Without vulcanization, rubber remains soft and sticky, losing its shape easily.

The primary function of a vulcanizing agent is to create cross-links between the long polymer chains of rubber molecules. These cross-links form a three-dimensional network structure, which significantly alters the physical properties of the rubber. Sulfur is the most widely used vulcanizing agent, and the process involving sulfur is known as sulfur vulcanization. Other common vulcanizing agents include peroxides, metal oxides, and certain organic compounds, depending on the specific type of rubber and desired properties.

During vulcanization, the rubber is heated in the presence of the vulcanizing agent, often with accelerators and activators to speed up the reaction and improve efficiency. The vulcanizing agent reacts with the rubber's polymer chains, forming chemical bonds that connect them. The degree of cross-linking determines the final characteristics of the rubber product, such as its hardness, flexibility, and resistance to heat and chemicals. Different vulcanizing agents and varying amounts of them can be used to achieve a wide range of rubber properties suitable for various applications, from tires and hoses to footwear and medical equipment.
