Voimala is the Finnish word for a power plant or power station. It refers to an industrial facility that generates electrical power from a primary energy source, and in some cases provides steam or mechanical energy for industrial processes or district heating. The term covers a broad spectrum of facilities, from large central generators to smaller local plants.

Power plants are categorized by energy source and technology. Common types include fossil-fuel plants (coal, oil, natural gas), nuclear plants, hydroelectric plants, wind farms, solar power facilities (photovoltaic and concentrating solar), and biomass or geothermal plants. Many plants operate in combined heat and power (CHP) mode, producing electricity and usable heat at the same time.

Typical plant equipment and process: a primary energy source heats a working medium (such as steam), which drives a turbine connected to an electric generator. The electricity is stepped up through transformers and fed into the grid. Plants may include cooling systems, fuel handling, control rooms, and safety systems. Capacity is measured in megawatts (MW) or gigawatts (GW).

Operation and regulation: power plants are subject to safety, environmental, and grid-connection regulations. They balance reliability, cost, and emissions, while adapting to changes in demand and the availability of renewables. In many regions, older facilities are retired and replaced with more efficient or low-emission technologies.
