By filling voids, designers can adjust density, stiffness, thermal and acoustic responses, chemical stability, and transport characteristics. The term is common in discussions of additive manufacturing and materials engineering, where controlled porosity plays a central role.

Fillers may be polymers, ceramics, metals, or energy-rich phases, introduced through infiltration, impregnation, infiltration under vacuum, chemical vapor deposition, sintering, or 3D printing. The choice of filler and filling method determines interfacial bonding, porosity retention, and distribution uniformity.
