Vlakmachine is a Dutch term that refers to a class of machines used to produce flat, smooth surfaces on workpieces. The term covers equipment used in woodworking and metalworking, ranging from traditional hand-powered devices to industrial planing and grinding machines.

In woodworking, vlakmachines include planers, jointers, and similar equipment. A planer removes material from a board to create parallel faces and a specified thickness, using a rotating cutterhead and feed motion. A jointer flattens and squares an edge or face by guiding the workpiece along a stationary cutter.

In metalworking, planing machines and surface grinders achieve flat surfaces on metal parts. A planing machine uses a cutting tool that moves relative to the workpiece to shave material and produce a true surface, while the workpiece may be moved under the tool or the tool may move along the workpiece. Surface grinders use a rotating grinding wheel to remove fine amounts of material for tight tolerances and smooth finishes.

Modern vlakmachines are typically powered and may be CNC-controlled for repeatable results. They often include safety features, dust or chip collection, precision guides, and controlled feed mechanisms to improve accuracy and efficiency in production environments.
