Vitrimer is a class of polymer materials that combines the processability of thermoplastics with the permanent crosslinking and recyclability of thermosets. They are characterized by their ability to undergo reversible crosslinking reactions at elevated temperatures. This means that when heated above a certain transition temperature, the covalent bonds within the network can dynamically break and reform, allowing the material to flow and be reshaped like a thermoplastic. Upon cooling, these bonds re-establish, forming a permanent, rigid network characteristic of thermosets.

The key to vitrimer behavior lies in the presence of specific dynamic covalent chemistries within the polymer backbone. Common examples include transesterification in polyester-based vitrimers and transcarbamoylation in polyurethane-based vitrimers. These dynamic bonds allow for a network rearrangement without significant degradation of the polymer chains.

This unique property makes vitrimers highly attractive for a variety of applications. Their ability to be reprocessed and recycled addresses environmental concerns associated with traditional thermosets, which are typically discarded after use.
