Viitepingest is a term used in Finnish digital publishing and library science to describe automated ingestion of bibliographic references from manuscripts into a reference database or publishing workflow. The process combines extraction, normalization, and integration to produce consistent metadata across platforms, enabling reliable citation linking.

The word combines viite (reference) and pingest, a form of ingestion used in editorial pipelines. While most common in Nordic publishing contexts, the concept reflects broader bibliographic ingestion practices in publishers, universities, and digital libraries.

In practice, viitepingest involves identifying reference sections, parsing data such as authors, titles, venues, years, and pages, and mapping these to standard schemas (BibTeX, RIS, Dublin Core, or Crossref). References are deduplicated, enriched with DOIs or ORCID IDs when available, and stored in a central database. The resulting metadata can be exported for manuscript templates and indexing.

Benefits include faster workflows, reduced manual entry errors, improved interoperability, and better discoverability of cited sources via persistent identifiers.
