Vesipatsaaseen is a Finnish term that translates literally to "water bear" and refers to the microscopic invertebrates commonly known as tardigrades. These eight-legged, segmented creatures are renowned for their extraordinary resilience and ability to survive in extreme environmental conditions. They are found in nearly every habitat on Earth, from mountaintops to the deep sea, and from tropical rainforests to Antarctic ice.

Tardigrades are characterized by their segmented bodies and claws, typically measuring less than a millimeter in length. Their most remarkable characteristic is their cryptobiotic state, a dormant condition that allows them to withstand dehydration, extreme temperatures (both hot and cold), radiation, and even the vacuum of space. In this state, they can reduce their metabolic activity to less than 0.01% of normal.

When favorable conditions return, tardigrades can rehydrate and resume their normal life cycle. They reproduce sexually and asexually and feed on the fluids of mosses, lichens, algae, and small invertebrates. Their unique survival mechanisms have made them a subject of intense scientific research, particularly in fields related to astrobiology and the development of radiation resistance. Despite their common name, they are not bears but belong to the phylum Tardigrada.
