Vesijäähdyttäminen, known in English as water cooling, is a method of heat removal used in various applications to prevent overheating. It involves circulating a liquid, typically water, through a system to absorb and dissipate heat. This process is particularly common in high-performance computing, where it is used to cool central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs).

The basic principle of water cooling involves a loop system. Heat-generating components are connected to a water block, which is a metal block with channels designed to allow water to flow through it. As the water circulates, it absorbs heat from the component. The heated water then flows to a radiator, where fins increase the surface area. A fan blows air across the radiator, transferring the heat from the water to the surrounding air. The cooled water then returns to the water block to repeat the cycle.

Beyond computing, water cooling is also employed in internal combustion engines, industrial machinery, and even some power plants. The effectiveness of water cooling lies in water's high specific heat capacity, meaning it can absorb a significant amount of heat before its temperature rises substantially. While air cooling relies on convection and conduction, water cooling utilizes convection and evaporation for more efficient heat transfer. Variations exist, including closed-loop and open-loop systems, each with its own advantages and disadvantages regarding complexity, maintenance, and performance.
