It encompasses the stages from raw water abstraction to treated water delivery and wastewater collection and treatment. The chain begins with securing a sustainable source of raw water, which can be groundwater from aquifers or surface water from rivers, lakes, or reservoirs. This raw water is then transported to a water treatment plant.

At the treatment plant, a series of physical, chemical, and biological processes are employed to remove impurities, contaminants, and pathogens. These processes include screening, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection (often using chlorine or UV radiation), and sometimes advanced treatments like activated carbon or membrane filtration. The goal is to ensure the water meets strict quality standards for human consumption.

Once treated, the clean water is stored in reservoirs or water towers to ensure a consistent supply and adequate pressure. From there, it is distributed to households, businesses, and industries through a network of underground pipes, known as the water distribution system.
