Verðlagsleiðréttingin, or price-level indexing, is the process of adjusting monetary values to reflect changes in the price level, with the aim of preserving real purchasing power over time. The adjustment is typically tied to an inflation index such as the consumer price index (CPI). At set intervals, contracts, wages, pensions, rents, or other payments are increased in proportion to the index.

In practice, verðlagsleiðréttingin is used in wage negotiations, collective agreements, and in the adjustment of social benefits and public pensions. It also affects long-term leases and some loan agreements, helping to reduce the erosion of contract terms by inflation.

Advantages include protecting real income, simplifying long-term planning, and reducing the temptation to negotiate ad hoc pay rises. Criticisms include dependence on the chosen index, potential misalignment with individual consumption patterns, and the risk of contributing to a wage-price spiral if many sectors index simultaneously. Implementations can be administratively complex and may require periodic recalibration.

In Iceland, as in many economies, price-level indexing is an instrument to maintain purchasing power in the face of inflation. The choice of index, the frequency of adjustment, and the setting of floor or cap rules vary across contracts and institutions.
