Vertailujännitteet, or reference voltages, are stable and precisely controlled voltage levels used as a baseline in electronic circuits. A stable reference voltage ensures that the output of a converter accurately reflects the input signal, regardless of variations in supply voltage or temperature.

The primary function of a reference voltage is to provide a fixed point of comparison. In an ADC, for example, the input signal's voltage is compared against the reference voltage to determine its digital equivalent. If the reference voltage fluctuates, the digital output will be inaccurate. Similarly, in a DAC, the reference voltage determines the full-scale output range of the analog signal generated from a digital input.

Bandgap references are popular for their good temperature stability and low voltage operation.

Applications for reference voltages are widespread, found in measurement instruments, power supplies, battery chargers, and communication systems. Precise reference voltages are essential for achieving high performance and reliability in these devices. Maintaining the integrity of the reference voltage is therefore a critical design consideration in analog circuit development.
