Etymology: The word combines the root related to Verein (union, agreement) with the suffix -bar, which forms adjectives meaning “capable of” or “having the property of.” The related verb vereinbaren denotes the act of creating an agreement; the past participle is vereinbart.

Usage: In legal and administrative language, one speaks of vereinbarte Bedingungen (agreed terms) or vereinbarte Termine (agreed dates). The predicate adjective ist/sind vereinbar means that something is compatible or in accordance with an agreement, or with the law (mit dem Gesetz vereinbar). The opposite form is unvereinbar (incompatible).

Examples: Die vereinbarten Fristen wurden eingehalten. Die Kosten sind mit dem Budget vereinbar. Die vorgeschlagenen Änderungen sind nicht mit dem Vertrag vereinbar.
