Verdifangst is a term that describes the process of capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide. This can be achieved through natural processes like reforestation and afforestation, which increase the uptake of CO2 by trees and other vegetation, or through technological solutions such as direct air capture (DAC) systems. The goal of verdifangst is to reduce the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, thereby mitigating climate change.

Natural verdifangst methods leverage the Earth's existing biological carbon cycles. Planting trees, for example, sequesters carbon as the trees grow and absorb CO2 during photosynthesis. Restoring degraded lands and promoting healthy soil can also enhance carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems. Technological approaches to verdifangst involve engineered systems designed to remove CO2 directly from the air or from industrial emissions. Direct air capture technologies use chemical processes to separate CO2 from ambient air, while carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies capture CO2 at its source, such as power plants or industrial facilities, before it is released into the atmosphere.
