Ventilasjonperfusjon refers to the relationship between ventilation and perfusion in the lungs. Ventilation is the process of air moving into and out of the lungs, while perfusion is the blood flow through the pulmonary capillaries. For efficient gas exchange, these two processes must be closely matched. Ideally, areas of the lung that receive more air (ventilation) should also receive more blood flow (perfusion).

The matching of ventilation and perfusion, often expressed as a V/Q ratio, is crucial for maintaining normal oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the blood. A V/Q ratio of approximately 0.8 is considered normal, indicating that ventilation is slightly less than perfusion.

Imbalances in V/Q can occur due to various conditions. Low V/Q ratios, where perfusion exceeds ventilation, can result from airway obstruction, such as in asthma or pneumonia, leading to impaired oxygen uptake. High V/Q ratios, where ventilation exceeds perfusion, can be caused by conditions that reduce blood flow to parts of the lung, such as pulmonary embolism or emphysema, leading to impaired carbon dioxide removal.

Understanding V/Q mismatch is essential in diagnosing and managing respiratory diseases. Techniques like V/Q scanning, which uses radioactive tracers to visualize ventilation and perfusion patterns, can help identify areas of imbalance and guide treatment.
